2308 Fundamentals of Cognition

An introduction to the major domains of psychological knowledge, informed by biological, cognitive, environmental and motivation perspectives. Emphasizes scientific theory and methods supplemented by applications to everyday experience.

2368 Supervised Research

Independent research conducted as part of the academic curriculum. May be repeated once. Nine hours of work per week will be distributed across research activities, and colloquium presentations.

Prerequisites: PSYC 2422 and 2424.

3330 Sensation and Perception

Study of sensory and perceptual systems. Emphasis is on the relationship of neurophysiological and cognitive principles. Major focus is on vision (visual neurophysiology, spatial vision, form, color, depth and motion) with some discussion of psychophysical methods, audition, speech perception and the chemical senses. Demonstrations and conducting experiments are part of course.

Prerequisite: PSYC 1300, 2422.

3331 Memory and Cognition

Examination of the fundamental principles of memory and thought, the experimental evidence to support these principles, and the theoretical perspectives used to understand them.

Prerequisites: PSYC 1300 and 2424 or consent of instructor.

3333 Simulation of Neural and Cognitive Processes

The interrelations among the study of the mind, the elaboration of brain mechanism, and studies in artificial intelligence. Discussion of modern computers as a model of brain functioning with emphasis on the question of parallel versus serial processing and contemporary approaches to information processing in the nervous system. Students will gain experience in modelling these processes on computers.

Prerequisite: PSYC 1300 or 2308.

3-90 Reading and Research

Independent study and research under supervision, with credit varying as indicated by numbers 3290, 3390, 3490.

Prerequisites: 9 semester hours in Upper Division psychology courses and consent of instructor.

4395 Senior Thesis I

Individual research and scholarly investigation under faculty supervision culminating in the preparation of a thesis. To be taken only by psychology majors in their senior year. Students are expected to enroll in PSYC 4396 to complete their thesis.

Prerequisites: PSYC 2422 and 2424, consent of instructor.

4396 Senior Thesis II

Completion of thesis research initiated in PSYC 4395, including written and oral presentation to the psychology faculty.

Prerequisite: PSYC 4395.

4398, 4399 Honors Thesis

Individual research and scholarly investigation under faculty supervision leading to the preparation of an Honors Thesis. To be taken only by Senior Honors students in both terms of their senior year.

Prerequisites: PSYC 2422 and 2424, consent of instructor.
