(Combining two messages originally sent 1/25 and 1/26, repeating
here for the archive.)

As I suspected -- some people know some of the material and
are finding the pace okay or even slow, while others don't
and are finding it too fast.

If you're in the latter group, my suggestion is this: After class,
find the notes on the Web and and go through them again. Try some
of the things mentioned, and/or skim man pages for the commands
I mention. If you get stuck or confused, ask. I think you will
also benefit from the reading (sometimes a lot, and if so -- skim),
and especially from the homework.

We'll revisit this question at some point, too.

A few more thoughts on this subject:

In doing the reading, it will probably help to have a computer nearby
where you can try things out as you read about them. (Since most of
what we're doing is text-only, this could be a remote-login session
to one of the lab machines.) Like programming, the material in
this course is "learn by doing" more than "learn by studying".

And when I say "ask" ....

For those of you who've taken programming courses with me, you
remember that the "open lab" office hours can be a big help.
I didn't specifically designate part of my office hours as open
lab this semester, but I'd be willing to do that if there's a
time that will work well for several of you. Or you can just
come to my office with questions, and we'll go find a lab computer
and practice.
