Hear what advice middle school vice principal Susan Toohey of Omaha, Nebraska has to give about a positive middle experience: |
| 1. What makes a positive middle school experience? “Having a staff that truly cares about kid and one that is willing to look at data/information and make changes! “ 2. What parent strategies do you see effective when dealing with their middle school child? “1. LISTEN to the child- show empathy and understanding. 2. BE CONSISTENT and do not waiver 3. SHOW YOU CARE- give kids hugs and tell them that you care. 4. SHOW UP!!!! (I mean this emotionally and physically)” 3. What is the biggest problem that you run into with middle school students? “Adults...seriously. I have parents telling their kids that it is OK to fight. I have teachers who sometimes do not act like the grown-up in a situation. The biggest problem I see is that children are not given models and TAUGHT what society expects of them (TV has NOT helped!).” 4. Have you observed that parental involvement affects the success of their child in school and how they behave? “Completely! I had a mom show up today and escort her son to classes. I am sure if he had the choice, that would not have happened. I think parents need to be visible in the buildings and ask their child about school EVERY DAY.” |
