Trinity University and the Department of Computer Science hosted Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Hal Abelson on March 1-3, 2004. He gave a public lecture on the information commons--the idea that universities have a role to play in keeping research and information in the public domain. The San Antonio Phi Beta Kappa Association sponsored a reception after the lecture. For more information about Hal, visit his home page. There you can learn more about DSpace, an initiative for electronic archiving of research; the online course materials of MIT's OpenCourseWare program; and Creative Commons, which strives to broaden the range of work available to fuel creativity. Also, you can find more information about the Phi Beta Kappa Society's Visiting Scholar program by visiting their visiting scholar program page and their home page. Trinity University's Epsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa has a home page. My sister Brita took this picture of Hal standing in front of the Alamo. It was March 2, Texas Independence Day, no less.
