Short Quiz Tuesday. The quiz will cover everything we have done so far this semester, including hands-on assignments and practices in class, homework assignments, reading and information from the Server Room tour.

Copy 5scavenge from the Class folder to your Groups folder

Check Your Groups Folder for Correct File Placement - no "loose" documents should be visible

All assignments should be saved with the correct name in the correct place (the folder numbers in the examples might look different, there should be no open folders or loose documents).

Update Grades spreadsheet
Copy Grades folder from class folder to your computer skills shared folder. The file in the folder is named GradesFall08.xlsx. Open the File

Open BlackBoard and Excel Grades Fall08 worksheet:

Insert cells for the next grade that you receive.

If the grade equivalent cells split, right click on the "extra" rows, go to delete, and select Shift Cells Up

BlackBoard - sometimes assignment will be posted before grading is done

Creating Entries on the Class Wiki

What is a Wiki anyway? Three ideas to consider:

"A wiki is software that allows users to create, edit, and link web pages easily. A wiki invites all users to edit any page or to create new pages within the wiki Web site, using only a plain-vanilla Web browser without any extra add-ons. A wiki enables documents to be written collaboratively, in a simple markup language using a web browser. A defining characteristic of wiki technology is the ease with which pages can be created and updated.
-Wikipedia (This page was last modified 19:25, 25 January 2008)

"The lack of understanding the medium of a Wiki, which is very fluid, but not forgetful, is astonishing. They have been around for three or four years, if not longer. It is usually one of the first lessons anybody I have known learns when dealing with a Wiki, they move and when quoting them one must get the version of the information. They are a jumping off point, not destinations. They are true conversations, which have very real ethereal qualities."
-Thomas Vander Wal

"From the above, it might seem that wikis are plagued with problems and risks. This is not at all the case. Everyday life on a wiki is full with the joy of learning and teaching, of seeing a collection of articles grow, all neatly hyperlinked. . . Most people, when they first learn about the wiki concept, assume that a website that can be edited by anybody would soon be rendered useless by destructive input. It sounds like offering free spray cans next to a grey concrete wall. The only likely outcome would be ugly graffiti and simple tagging, and many artistic efforts would not be long lived. Still, it seems to work very well."
-Lars Aronsson, Operation of a Large Scale, General Purpose Wiki Website
