In Shawn Lee's world Ennio Morricone dances with Esquivel and Gainsourg as spaghetti western guitars and harmonicas ride fat drum breaks accompanied by vibes, lush strings and piano. On Voices and Choices Lee's signature style moody instrumentals are accompanied by vocals for the first time in four albums.

Full songs and instrumental textures are nods to classic producers David Axelrod and Charles Stepney who used choir-like walls of vocal to create their big productions. Ubiquity label mate Nino Moschella joins Lee on the rock 'n' soul epic "Kiss the Sky", while Ohmega Watts waxes positive lyrical on "The Glass Hour Effect". Instrumentals "JW" and "Song For David" are just begging for an accompanying movie to match the cinematic sounds, while "Tense Bossa" and "Glass Act" feature subtle vocal parts to heighten the spy-theme tension.

Releases by Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra started off as an experiment. Multi-instrumentalist and record collector Lee was obsessed by vintage library records and wanted to see if he could recreate their soundtrack-worthy sounds in his curio-shop-like London studio. Library records were originally produced to provide instrumental musical backing for TV, film, radio and advertising. Specific library records have become highly collectable, and are favored by DJs and producers for the occasional drum break, sample or funk track.

Lee's idea was to make full-length library albums that were good from start to finish and equally listenable at home as they might also be DJ friendly. Unsure of how commercially successful these records would be, the first three albums were released in limited pressings and with only a very minor publicity push. However, not only did Lee succeed in recreating the vibe of classic library records, he also attracted the interest of advertisers and producers with tracks being used in commercials for BMW and Jaguar as well as in TV shows such as Malcom In the Middle, Lost, and Desperate Housewives.

Arguably the best American band who never made it when alternative music suddenly became a huge proposition in the early '90s, the Chainsaw Kittens predated and outlasted that time with its own marvelous, energetic blend of glam-damaged energy, theatrical extremity, and punk rock basics. Fronted by Tyson Meade, former lead singer of Defenestration, the Oklahoma-based group came together in early 1989, shortly thereafter signing to the Mammoth label. Initially partnering on guitar with Mark Metzger but working thereafter with band stalwart Trent Bell, Meade and company released a debut, Violent Religion, to relatively little attention. However, the band built up a steady reputation through touring and appearing with a variety of up-and-coming bands, most notably the Smashing Pumpkins. The Kittens' sophomore release, 1992's Butch Vig-produced Flipped Out in Singapore, helped to heighten the group's profile and fan base further, while a follow-up EP in 1993, Angel on the Range, introduced what would finally be a stable rhythm section for the band, bassist Matt Johnson and drummer Eric Harmon. Mammoth's tie-up with Atlantic gave a boost to what should have been the band's breakthrough, 1994's Pop Heiress. The hoped-for smash didn't materialize, but the group kept on, issuing a self-titled album (also known as Oklahoma Speedway) in 1996 on Scratchie. The Kittens then took an extensive break while its members pursued other musical and personal work before returning in 2000 on 4 Alarm with The All-American.

Angel on the Range

This seven-song mini-album, produced by UK boardsman Chris Allison in a slightly rougher style than Singapore, showed a changed Kittens. Meade was still front and center, of course, but Bell was now the main guitarist in place of the departed Metzger, while the rhythm section was wholly new again, with bassist Matt Johnson and drummer Eric Harmon. Quality suffered not a jot, happily, and the group did what it does best, kicking out the snarling guitar jams with sass and style. Meade sounds hoarse at points — either the rehearsals were intense or he had just come off tour — but aside from that, it's one fine blast after another. The title track is one of the best Kittens songs around, a T. Rex-tinged acoustic guitar/drum stomp with some great electric guitar crunch, dramatic pauses and sweet production touches to boot. "John Wayne Dream," with its snarky references to being on the prairie with "a boy, a priest and a mule," is a funny and giddy romp, while "Sgt. ~censored~" has a nicely queasy feel to it, accentuated by the slightly buried piano line and crackling feedback. Bell takes lead vocals on the concluding "Little Fishies," a goofy little jam.

Flipped Out in Singapore

With the help of Butch Vig behind the boards — and to be sure, opening cut "Connie I've Found the Door" rather sounds like a cut by then-current Vig clients the Smashing Pumpkins, musically if not vocally — Chainsaw Kittens amped up all their glam/punk strengths with great results. What sometimes came across as pleasant willfulness on Violent Religion gets transformed into full-on glee, anger, and debauchery in equal spades. As rock very happily kicking against images of the humdrum and conservative — especially in 1992, when there was plenty of that going around in music and out of it — Flipped Out in Singapore is a veritable feast. Another set of too-perfect song titles like "My Friend Delirium," "Shannon's Fellini Movie," and "Angels Self Destruct" make the grit-and-glitter aesthetic clear enough; an aesthetic the Kittens pursue with gusto. Tyson Meade's slinky and shrill vocals suit the driving hysteria of the music even better than before, while the band itself is helped by the addition of previous album guest Trent Bell on guitar. Drummer Aaron Preston brings a stronger presence to his job than was previously heard, no doubt helped along by Vig's skills. Dramatic and effective touches abound — the Iggyish snarl midway through "High in High School," followed by echoed drums and strummed acoustic guitar, or the hilariously goofy backwards vocals (or are they?) in the title track, not to mention the concluding gang-shout. Meade comes up with some wonderfully wired lyrics throughout — thus the opening lines to "Never to Be Found" (which also has some lovely chiming guitar on the breaks to recommend it): "The ambulance is gone and the crowd lingers on, and the surveillance team's gathering bodies, but they'll be gone at dawn" — this from a love song, to top it all off.

Starting with the massive, wonderful blast of "Sore on the Floor," with Meade proclaiming over the opening din "Come on, come on, hang on, hang on!," the Kittens unleashed their masterpiece, as near-perfect as a should-have-been smash album could be. The group's various influences crop up more than once — Marc Bolan would have loved hearing the stuttering strut of "I Ride Free" — but by now the Kittens were very much their own standard, Meade leading his merry men with skill and style. Released via Atlantic, with radio-friendly but not bland at all production and performances, somehow Heiress missed following in the slipstream of alternative's mainstream triumph. Admittedly, Meade's unrepentant embrace of makeup and high vocals probably would freak out a fair amount of listeners from the start, but then again, isn't that the point? Keeping the same line-up from Angel on the Range, the Kittens as a whole are their flush, exultant best. Bell really comes into his own as the lead guitarist here, with both he and Meade loaded with energy to burn. Whether it's the chunky stop-start punch of "Pop Heiress Dies" or the epic wallop and feedback screams of "Burn You Down" — gong and all — the Kittens sound throughout like they're having the time of their lives. Besides the overwhelming glam brawlers with which the Kittens made their understandable name, the group works in a variety of other touches and approaches, taking full advantage of their major-label recording budget. "Dive Into the Sea" is especially great, with guest piano and cello performers adding to the 'spotlight ballad with amplification' crush of the song, Meade turning in one of his best performances and lovedrunk lyrics. Credit also to more great song titles — "Silver Millionaire," the fantastic "Media Star Hymn" — and the wickedly funny cover art, a false-color image of Patty Hearst in her guntoting days.

There is a hardcore of humbugging New Order chroniclers who'll disdainfully view Retro--a five CD "Best Of" box set with bells on--as another missed opportunity to find a home for all the waif-and-stray rarities of the band's career. They have a point. Whither "Run 2", "MTO", "Video 586", the Western Works demos, the Hacienda Christmas flexi, various previously unreleased live BBC radio and TV sessions or--not for the first time and most heinously of all--the classic, definitive "blue ribbon cover" version of "Ceremony"? Nevertheless, journalists Miranda Sawyer (who harvests most of the familiar hits on the "Pop" disc) and John McCready (who--from the haunting grace of "Elegia" to the latterday lullaby of "Run Wild"--assembles key album cuts on the "Fan" disc) hardly put a foot wrong. Rejoice, for the original full-length vinyl versions of "Temptation" and "Confusion" (both ousted by remixes on the Substance compilation) are judiciously reinstated while such errant clangers as "State of the Nation" and the slapdash 12-inch of "Subculture" are consigned--forever, hopefully--to the dustbin of misadventure.
Although "Ceremony" and the doomed imperialistic dirge of "In a Lonely Place" (both Joy Division compositions, of course--just how good could that third Joy Division album have been?) remain two of the best songs in the band's repertoire, the real New Order first stood up with the motorised whirring of 1981's transitional "Everything's Gone Green"--a tentative juxtaposition of the lyrically downbeat (solitude, disorientation and so on) and stimulating, electronic rhythms. It was a blueprint not only for their future but for popular music's future, for within 24 months--while road testing a new drum machine--New Order had conceived "Blue Monday", unarguably one of the five most important records made since the very genesis of rock & roll. Essentially, Retro tells you everything Joe Public needs to know about New Order's transformation from reticent, sour-faced introverts to matey, media-conducive hedonists with Mike Pickering's cherry-picked compendium of remixes (Disc Three) and Bobby Gillespie's bootlegger-ish live selection (Disc Four) upping the "must-have" ante for New Order completists aggrieved by the aforementioned omissions.

Bittersweet World is the third studio album by singer Ashlee Simpson. It is scheduled for release in the United States on April 22, 2008. Simpson worked on the album with producers Timbaland, Chad Hugo, and Kenna. It has been described by Simpson as a "fun party album" with a "silly and quirky" side and some influence from 1980s music. If I were to review this cd purely on the music it contains I would be forced to award 5 stars. Greatest hits albums though I believe should contain much more than just a basic re-run through an artists most popular moments. There should be a celebratory booklet full of reminiscence, info, photo's and chart information. This album fails miserably to deliver in any of those departments and instead comes across as a hurried cash-in from a record company no longer interested in promoting the band or pleasing fans. The booklet is basic to say the least and contains nothing of worth to read whatsoever. On the bright side, the one new track here, the cover of 'Magical Mystery Tour' is classic CT and does at least provide long term fans with some reward for buying this. Amazon's track list does not say so but both 'I Want You To Want Me' and 'Ain't That A Shame' are the familiar 'Budokhan' live versions here which adds little to the feel of this as an album in it's own right either.
So, if you want to simply own CT's most famous tracks this is for you.
