Introduction:

(materials: flash video with new batteries, class roll, text, post-it notes on each monitor, turn off monitor and push it down)
(display class web page, turn off fluorescent light and turn on dim lights)

As a courtesy to others: turn off cell phones, do not check email, surf, or open applications other than what we are doing in class

Objectives:
    Be able to get to class web page and understand the layout.
    Be able to set up and update blog. (Web 2.0)

History of Course - Essential Computer Skills - Technology and Information Fluency

Catalog Description: Introduction to computer skills. Computing hardware, software, files and formats. Text processing.  Numbers and quantitative analysis. Information structure and retrieval. Graphics and visualization. Communication, networking and the World Wide Web. Computer ethics, privacy and legal use of software and data. Solution of several problems illustrating each of these skill areas. Prerequisites:  none.

Computer Skills designated in Common Curriculum:

Introduction to Computing (hardware, software, files, and formats).

Computers and Text (the uses of word processing software).

Computers and Numbers (quantitative analysis using spreadsheet software).

Computers and Information Retrieval (structuring and retrieving data using database software).

Computers and Graphics (visualizing and illustrating data using graphics software).

Computer Communications (using Local Area Networks, electronic mail, and the World Wide Web).

Computer Ethics (issues of privacy and the legal use of software and data).

Creating a Blog on Blogger


Assignments (see right column on Home Page for reading)

Hands on:

Due Monday night at midnight (i.e. the night before the next class at midnight)
Set up your blog and create a post introducing yourself. Remember to use language, grammar, etc. appropriate in an academic setting.
Tell us about yourself. Include the video of yourself made in class.
You could also include any passions or special interests you have in technology.
You might want to include a link from Google maps or Google Earth to where you live.
There will be a place people can post comments to your entry. Please include a link to your email address for private comments.
