-Be able to access your network drives from you own computer as long as you are connected on campus.

Choose your computer for the semester at the beginning of class

Introduce Discourse (131.194.71.230)

• Click icon on desktop.
• File > Logon via IP > 131.194.71.230
• Teacher can see your responses to questions as you type them

• Right click on white space
• New >> Shortcut
• Type in url of class web page

 Navigate to Class Web Page

Your Electronic Folders for Computer Skills

• Class Folder - N: drive - look in My Computer
• Groups Folder

Class Folder - Dr. Semmes puts files and folders here for you to copy

Go to Class folder from My Computer. The class
folder will open.

Also can use Start >> Run

Groups Folder - Folder for your homework

• Start--> Run --> type  \\tucc-tiger\Groups\ComputerSkills\Semmes\
• Look for your folder and open it.

Create shortcut to your Groups folder.

The shortcut to the Groups folder will by in your Y drive with the shortcut you made to the class web page.

Shortcuts - A shortcut is a quick way to open a folder or start a frequently used program

• Open your Y drive. The shortcut is going to be here.
• Rt-click on a white space >> New >> Shortcut

• Try it out by clicking on the shortcut.

Changing Icons of Shortcuts:

May not work on lab computers
Right Click on Shortcut>Properties>Shortcut Tab>Change Icon?>Choose what you like

Practice

1. Create a Shortcut in your Y: drive to the Class Folder

2. Use your shortcuts to copy the 2practice folder from the Class folder to the Groups folder
   Open file in 2practice folder. Read and Head. Enter your name, etc. and delete the line.

3. SAVE (not save as)

In-class - edit blogs with a partner
Pair up and critique each others' blogs. Look at the introductory entry as if you are a professional person such as a professor or employer looking for an intern or new employee to hire. Discuss changes that need to be made to both blogs (edit text, change language, add elements, etc).

Things to look for as you review:

• Name and Title on blog
• Appropriate Title for Introduction Post
• Introduction
• Video
• Link to email address
  
• Look for the place where you can check spelling in your post.
  
•  Read Thoughts about Blogging and Academics http://lynbelisle.blogspot.com/2007/08/thought-about-blogging-especially-in.html . Be sure to take the link in Mrs. Belisle's blog entry to Jennifer Garret's blog post. Discuss this with your partner

Note: The criteria (below) will apply to every blog entry

• Correct grammar – some informal phrasing might be acceptable
• Correct punctuation and capitalization
• Correct spelling
• Complete sentences
• No slang or non–standard usage
• Appropriate photos
• Comments on blogs should adhere to the same standards as blog entries

 Homework

• Edit your blog as needed.
  
• Blog Post: Make a post telling your readers about your computer experience, what kind of computer you have, your thoughts about the class and what you would like to learn. What is the situation with your own computer? Can you connect to your Y: drive, the class folder, the groups folder?
  

• Be prepared for a quiz on

  • the Code of Ethics for Computing and for Electronic and Voice Mail  and

  • class work from the first two classes.

• Be able to use the shortcuts you created to get a folder from the class folder and copy it to your shared folder in Groups.

• Be able to tell who has permissions in your personal folder on Y, the class folder on N, the shared Groups folder.
