Curriculum for Undergraduate Business Educationtm

The Smeal College CUBEtm marks a fundamental departure in American business education. At the heart of our new program is the Junior Core. For the first time, the barriers among the business disciplines have been erased and undergraduate students are learning about business the way it really works. Rather than discovering the principles of finance, marketing, or accounting in dry isolation, Smeal students now see how these functions work together through an integrated series of core courses taken in their junior year. Faculty members teach in teams and are supported by the latest learning technologies. Business cases-involving real corporations-are tackled. Students see how marketing decisions impact financial decisions, and how those in turn may influence accounting and other issues. They work on projects in teams just as they will as managers. And, they learn to leverage electronic hardware and software just as they will in their professional careers.

The CUBEtm, though, is more than the Junior Core, and Smeal students may customize their education along career-interest lines through our business majors. They also learn about the management of quality and technology, how to succeed in a more ethnically diverse workplace, and ways to think about the ethical, environmental, and legal aspects of business decisions. Because business today is practiced on an international scale, Smeal business students also are expected to have competence in a foreign language and to know about the history and cultures of other nations. These studies and other requirements outside of the business disciplines will make Smeal graduates more rounded educationally.
