Good vs. Bad Online Content for Learning: How the Pros Design, Author, Test, and Deliver Knowledge Portals and Online Courses for Prestigious Universities and Online Supplements for Publishing Companies

Description/Objectives:
The first theme of the workshop is on the purpose, design, and implementation of Fathom, which Yahoo honored as the world's "Best Learning Portal." Fathom is operated by a partnership that includes the following:

  1. Columbia University
  2. London School of Economics and Political Science
  3. Cambridge University Press
  4. The British Library
  5. Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History
  6. The New York Public Library
  7. University of Chicago
  8. American Film Institute
  9. RAND
  10. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

A second theme is how the pros design, author, test, and deliver online courses. UNext Corporation owns Cardean University and has partnered with five prestigious universities (Carnegie-Mellon, Chicago, Columbia, Stanford, and the London School of Economics) to deliver online courses owned and controlled by those universities. The pros in this case are instructors with UNext Corporation. This portion of the workshop is especially designed for persons interested in online MBA programs and executive development programs. A third theme is how the pros design, author, test, and deliver online supplements for publishing companies. Dr. Walsh will make a presentation on how he designed his online supplements for Prentice Hall's basic accounting textbook by Horngren, Harrison, and Bamber. This portion of the workshop is especially designed for the basic accounting instructors and online textbook supplement users. Special emphasis is placed upon "The Good Versus The Bad."

A fourth theme of the conference is the new style of online materials development and course delivery at the new Chartered Accountancy School of Business (CASB) in Canada.

Don Carter, PhD, FCA, is the Vice President, Learning for the new CA School of Business (CASB). He has been the Principal, School of Chartered Accountancy and Director of Professional Education with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia (ICABC) for almost 20 years.  Don Carter has fifteen years experience as a faculty member at universities across Canada, the U.S., and overseas and twenty years experience in developing and administering professional education programs.
  He earned his CA designation in 1966, and received his PhD from the University of California in 1977. In 1991, he was honoured with a fellowship (FCA designation) in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC. The "FCA" is the highest honour given to a Chartered Accountant in Canada.

Dr. Kirschenheiter is Associate Professor of Accounting at Columbia Business School. Kirschenheiter worked at Arthur Andersen & Co. and, shortly after becoming an audit manager, obtained a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.   At Columbia, Kirschenheiter teaches courses in financial and managerial accounting, equity valuation, and accounting theory. In 1999, Columbia University signed an agreement with UNext.com, a private company, to create web-based business courses. This agreement was soon followed by agreement between UNext.com and University of Chicago, Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford University and the London School of Economics and Political Science. Acting as liason between the Columbia Business School accounting department and UNext.com,  He helped draft one of the first courses resulting from these business agreements. He will speak on his experiences, including the difficulties and opportunities of web-based accounting courses."

Dr. Walsh developed on-line accounting courses to supplement Prentice Hall’s Accounting by Horngren, Harrison and Bamber, served as an academic reviewer to a University Access on-line accounting course and has presented a number of papers at academic conferences about different aspects of on-line accounting education. Professor Walsh received his Ph.D. from Notre Dame in 1995. He also was employed as an auditor for Deloitte & Touche and as a tax specialist at PricewaterhouseCoopers and is a CPA in the state of Michigan. Dr. Walsh has also created and administered on-line MBA accounting courses at Marist.
