New Bookmarks

Prior to 1998, I sent out editions of New Bookmarks as email messages that were not saved to a Web server. I no longer have records of those early editions that commenced somewhere around 1994.

One of the frustrating things about early editions of New Bookmarks is that many, actually most, links are now broken. Such is life on the Internet.

Also many documents that are still being served up are no longer updated or they are updated as different documents. For more current versions of documents go to the links at my main home page at http://www.trinity.edu/rjensen/

There are several guides to web sites of colleges and universities. One of the better ones for the U.S. that I recently stumbled onto is at

Both Navigator and Explorer let you create buttons that access an entire folder of bookmarks as pop-up menus.

To create a folder button (or pop-up menu) for your Navigator browser, first click on the Bookmarks Quickfile and select Edit Bookmarks. Then open the Toolbar folder. If you haven’t created any bookmarks for the Personal toolbar, this folder will be empty. Next, click on the Toolbar folder once to highlight it and then go to the Item menu and select Insert Folder. Navigator will display a Bookmark Properties dialog box. In the Name text box, enter a name for the new folder that you want to place on the Personal toolbar and click OK. You can add bookmarks to the folder by copying or dragging existing bookmarks to the new folder. You can also create a new folder of bookmarks by simply copying or dragging an existing folder of bookmarks to the Toolbar folder. If a folder gets too crowded, you can create subfolders by adding folders within folders, which creates layered pop-up menus. When you exit the Bookmarks window, you’ll see a new folder icon on the Custom toolbar. To access a bookmark from the pop-up menu just click on the folder and then the bookmark you want to open. As you conduct research on the Internet, you’ll find additional Web sites that you want to include in a bookmark pop-up menu. To add a bookmark to a menu, just go to the Location icon on the Location toolbar and drag the bookmark to the folder on the Custom toolbar. Navigator will place the bookmark in the folder at the bottom of the existing bookmarks.

Creating a folder button on Explorer’s Links toolbar takes only a few steps. First, display the Links toolbar by going to Internet Explorer’s View menu and selecting Toolbars/Links. Next, create a folder for the group of bookmarks you want to access. To create a folder, go to the Favorites menu and select Organize Favorites. Explorer will display an Organize Favorites dialog box. Click on the New Folder icon. When Explorer creates the new folder, type a name for the folder. The drag and drop the bookmark shortcuts that you want to include into the new folder. Finally, drag the new folder to the Links folder, and Internet Explorer will display the new folder on your Links toolbar, which you can use for quick access to your search bookmarks.

You can also create and work with folders on the Links toolbar as you’d work with a folder in a regular Windows directory. Just go to the Links window in the directory Windows/Favorites/Links. One important point: Internet Explorer will default to displaying the content of folder buttons with large bookmark icons. To reduce the size of these icons, click on the folder button, which will open it. Then place the mouse cursor on the folder name at the top of the Folder Content list, and right-click. Internet Explorer will display a pop-up menu. To reduce the icon size, select View/Small.

Searching newsgroups

There are a variety of search engines that specialize in newsgroup searching, but few offer original content - most pull information from the DejaNews index. Tile.net, however, provides special functions you won’t find in standard search engines and that can prove very useful in resear ching newsgroup information. Tile.net is a Web site designed to make USENET newsgroups easy to find. Tile.net’s advantage over other newsgroup indexes is that it helps you search for newsgroups rather than individual messages. Tile.net also provides statistics and other information about newsgroups and provides a link directly to each newsgroup, which will launch your Web browser newsreaders. Newsgroups in Tile.net are organized by index, description, and newsgroup hierarchy. Tile.net also provides information about listservs, FTP sites, and computer product vendors.

You’ll find the Tile.net Web site at

Academic Assistance Access (AAA) is at http://www.tutoraid.org/ The first two FAQs read as follows:

Q. What is Academic Assistance Access (AAA) ? A. AAA is a Internet forum in which questions are asked to a host of professionals who, in turn, will send an answer. The whole AAA concept relies on a mailing list environment. As a student, if you need help with your homework or assignments in any field, now or at any other time, this is the place to get it all... Free of Charge!!!

Q. What is a mailing list?

A. A mailing list is a collection of electronic mailing addresses grouped together under one subject. Joining a mailing list is an excellent way to connect to others on the Internet who may have similar interests. It should be pointed out that you will receive all questions and answers that are being sent to that particular mailing list(including your own).

Other FAQs are listed at http://www.tutoraid.org/faq/index.html

The AAA is used by students needing help in different academics areas. Students ask their questions, and some professors have signed up to reply to their questions. Professors don’t just answer the questions but generally try to lead the student in the right direction or explain some point that they may have trouble grasping..

The AAA has an accounting education section that can be subscribed to by emailing "Majordomo@tutoraid.org" with "subscribe ps-accounting" in the body of the letter.
