Presentation:

Create a power point presentation.

It must include a report of your findings from your quiz, including a graph and/or chart (this may be a poster instead of a slide, if you so desire). It should be attractive, informative, and clear.
Using research of your own, create a persuasive argument for the race that you think best represents America, its government, and citizens.
- Does this conform to your findings from your survey? Why or why not?
What race best represents how a country and people should interact?
- Why do you feel this way? What countries around the world best exemplify this?
If America does not, in your opinion, represent the best “race” of Middle-earth, how can it evolve to that other state (activism, legislature, a nation-wide revival, etc.)?
- This is the most important section of the slideshow. Allow your audience to empathize—if not sympathize—with your utopian vision for this country (why would America be better if it more emulated the Elves, Ents, etc). Provide ways in which they can help make that vision a reality.
- If America is the perfect race, explain why, and how it can remain that way.
  - Do not choose America as the perfect race simply because it is easy. If reasonable thought and persuasive argument do not compellingly show the audience this, you will receive an “F” on this portion of the project (which is 50% of the total grade).

Project Guidelines and Requirements

Database:

During your reading of The Lord of the Rings, begin filling out the provided databases for the different races of sentient beings in Middle-earth.

Include at least nine entries.
Note their characterizations (i.e. general behavior and personalities; point out minor deviances)
- Create a second entry for extreme divisions among races, such as between the different clans of Men.
Describe their manner of “interracial dealings,” be it in wars (past or present), trade, and daily interactions.
Note their environmental behavior. How do they coexist with nature around them?
What kind of “intra-racial” unity is there? Do they coexist well among themselves (in their cities/countries and between nations/clans)?
What sort of economic system do they have, if noted?
What form of government do they have? (You may have to deduce this from above information.)

Quiz:

Summarize your database information into single sentences or phrases that characterize each race. Create a survey asking at least twenty participants how they would classify the United States and its citizens by the characterizations of races in Middle-earth.

Do not use the names of races; make them appear to be simple classifications of different people groups.
Steer clear of loaded questions; avoid questions that make America’s policies look especially bad or good in order to produce a certain answer.
Six to eight participants must be of young adult age (16-22); two to three must be younger; ten to thirteen must be older.
- Hint: include year of birth as a question
Include ten questions, encompassing most national policy.
Not all races must be included in every question, but offer a selection of answers that embrace the majority of Middle-earth’s stances on each issue.
