1st Part: The Research

Hello student! For your final project you will explore how the term "Just War" has changed over time. Your main focus however, will be the Conquest of New Spain and the current war between the United States and Iraq.

First of all, you are to research the five main theories of Just War. This way, you will learn how society has changed its point of view on justice over  time. Then, by using the two novels you read over the year, The Conquest of New Spain by Bernal Diaz and Broken Spears by Miguel Leon-Portilla, you are to decide which theory(ies) of Just War society believed in at the time of the Spanish conquest and whether or not society believed the Spanish conquest was considered a Just War based on their definition.

You will then need to research what society considers Just War today and decide whether or not society would consider the Spanish conquest a Just War based on the definition today.

Once you have done that, you will need to research the causes behind the United States war against Iraq by using current articles. By doing so, you will be able to create your personal opinion about the war. Once you have acquired this knowledge, you are to decide whether or not society today considers the U.S./Iraq war just based on the Just War theory today.

Since definitions on paper are not always enough to give you the full picture you are required to create a survey that must inquire a total of twenty people. In it, you must ask each person if they believe the Spanish conquest was just and if they believe the U.S./Iraq war today is just.

2nd Part: The Task

After researching the different theories, reading about the Spanish conquest in the novels, learning about the U.S./Iraq war, and asking the general public, you are to create a multimedia presentation on either Photostory, Microsoft Powerpoint, or iMovie presenting the information.

You must also create a spreadsheet on Microsoft Office Excel  that contains a graph of your survey results and you must explain why you believe your survey gave you those specific outcomes.

3rd Part: The Requirements

  • Your multimedia presentation must contain between 20 to 25 slides.

  • Make sure you address every aspect of the project that was presented earlier.

  • Information must be well presented and straight to the point.

  • You MUST incorporate a copy of your survey results graph into your multimedia presentation.

  • You must cite all your sources correctly in every part of the project.

  • Project must be turned in no later than May 3, 2008. Points will be deducted for every day it is late.
