About Paint Shop Pro
Jasc is one of many companies that have successfully made
the transition to a shareware company to a software corporation whose gross
sales last year exceeded $16,000,000.
In my opinion, Paint Shop Pro 5 is the best paint package
for the money. It supports all of the major graphics standards. It can
be used for drawing and retouching. Paint Shop Pro can convert more than
30 different graphic formats; it contains an excellent screen capture application
and a graphics animator. This graphics software is available from
a number of Internet Sites.
Paint Shop Pro version 5.xx is designed for Windows 95/98/NT.
Paint Shop Pro version 3.xx is designed for Windows 3.1 and is still
available from some download sites. We shall download and install the Windows
95/98/NT version.
Paint Shop Pro is available as a self-extracting archive
(.exe extension) You need no additional software to install files compressed
as a self-extracting archive. No special decompression software is needed!
Downloading Self-Extracting Paint Shop Pro
1] Start Netscape and go To Jasc's Home Page.
http://www.jasc.com/
2] Many web companies change their home page frequently.
Somewhere on the page will be a link to download a fully functional evaluation
copy of Paint Shop Pro 5.xx; the current version of Paint Shop Pro is 5.0,
but this might just as easily be updated to 5.1 shortly after this document
reaches the web. Using the mouse, select/push the download button. (See
above!)

3] This has now taken us to the Jasc download page. Somewhere
on the page will be a link to download an evaluation copy of Paint Shop
Pro 5.xx. Using the mouse, select/push the download button. (See above!)

3] Somewhere on the next page will be a collection of
links from which one can download an evaluation copy of Paint Shop
Pro 5.xx. The illustration above provides links to four different download
sites which offer access to Paint Shop Pro 5.xx. The Jasc Software site
was chosen in the illustration above.
4] You must now decide where, on your hard drive, you would
like to place the software download. I would recommend downloading all
software into the Temp folder on hard drive
C. In the graphic below.
-
the name for the download file will remain
psp501ev.exe
-
the file transfer location will be
C:\Temp
Using the mouse, push/select the Save button!
(See Above!)
5] Netscape will attempt to approximate the remaining
download time. You may continue to use Netscape while the download is in
process. (See Below!)
6] After the download is complete, it is time to take
a look at the the download file. Using Windows 95/NT, double-click
on My Computer and double-click on folder
Temp. From the graphic below, we can see
that the downloaded file ,called psp14.exe,
is 2.93 MB in size. Since the size of this file exceeds
the 1.4 MB capacity of the normal 3.5" floppy disk; it may not be saved
on a single floppy disk!
The download file,
psp14.exe,
is a compressed, self-extracting archive. All self-extracting archive files
have a .exe extension. In order to
decompress any self-extracting archive, you need only double-click on the
icon with your mouse! Double-click on the psp14.exe
icon with your mouse to start the Install Program!
(See Below!)

The Paint Shop Pro Install Program
7] As is generally the case with most install programs,
it is often best to accept most of the default/recommended arguments suggested
by the install program. Using the mouse, push/select the Next
button! (See Below!)
When you download and decompress file
psp14.zip,
the WinZip application will decompress it to get the same
psp14.exe
file that was downloaded above. From this point on,
the Paint Shop Pro Set Up installation is the same for those that downloaded
psp14.exe as it is for those that downloaded
psp14.zip.
8] When using Windows 95 and Windows NT is often
a good idea to to install all of your applications in the
Program
Files folder.
Paint Shop Pro is
a good name for the folder/directory in which to store this application.
If the folder Paint Shop Pro
does not exist,
the install program will create it. You may select an alternate location
if you like. Using the mouse, push/select the Next button!
(See Below!)
9] Backup files make it simple to return your computer
to the previous configuration if the system somehow locks up during the
install sequence and fails to boot; having installed this application at
least thirty times, I have never needed these files. I still select
the Yes radio button. Using the mouse, push/select the Next
button! (See Below!)
10] This next screen tells me that the backup files shall
be placed in the directory/folder
C:\Program Files\Paint Shop Pro\Backup.
Using the mouse, push/select the Next button!
(See Below!)
11] I would like to have a shortcut added to my Start
button. I still select the Yes .radio button. Using the mouse, push/select
the Next button! (See Below!)
12] The Paint Shop Pro folder is a fine location in
which to place the shortcut within the Start button. Using the mouse,
push/select the Next button! (See Below!)
13] All decisions have now been made. Using the mouse,
push/select the Start Install button! (See Below!)
14] The Paint Shop Pro Set Up and Install program will
attempt to keep me posted with respect to the progress being made by the
installation. This installation generally takes about a minute or less.
(See Below!)
14] The Paint Shop Pro Set Up and Install is now complete.
.(See Below!) Using the mouse, push/select the Exit button!
(See Below!)
14] The system must be restarted in order to reflect
the shortcuts added to the Start Menu. I recommend restarting the system
immediately. Using the mouse, push/select the OK button!
(See Below!)
ShareWare
The Makers of Paint Shop Pro have the following to say
about shareware! What is Shareware?
"Shareware is a way
of obtaining and evaluating software, giving users the
opportunity to try
a program on their own computer before buying it.
While shareware is
copyrighted, and the copyright holder retains all rights, the
author specifically
grants a user the right to freely evaluate and distribute the
program, with limited
exceptions.
After using Paint Shop
Pro for the defined evaluation period (30 days), the user
must purchase a licensed
copy or remove the shareware program from their
system. "
"Paint Shop Pro is available as Shareware for you to try
out for 30 days free of charge. If you continue to use the program after
30 days, you must register it. You can obtain product pricing and also
order the registered version from this Web site.
