If you have not downloaded FTP Install, you might want
to follow the link below for assistance.
Install FTP Explorer
(ftpx)
1] The first time the application is run, the user is provided
an opportunity to accept some sample profiles. These profiles contain links
to a number of software archives and corporate download sites. I would
recommend accepting these sites. I push the Yes button!

2] As you can see below, configurations for CICA (Mosaic),
Netscape, Microsoft, and a number of others have been pre-configured for
you. I would like to configure a ftp profile for my computer science account.
I push the Add button! (below)
3] Each Web site is stored on a hard drive associated
with some computer linked to the web. Individuals creating web sites will
need to get the following information from their Internet Provider before
they can create a web site!

Host Name [IP address or Computer Host Name] - Trinity
University Computer Science faculty store their web accounts on a host
named sol.cs.trinity.edu

Login Name [Your login name is almost always the same
as your e-mail name] - My login name on all Trinity University accounts
is thicks

Password [Your password is almost always the same
as your e-mail password]] - My password is
********

Port[The port is almost always 21, but it
is best to ask and be sure] - My port is
21

Initial Path [Where has this provider decided to house
your web pages. Your user name is almost always a part of that path] -
Trinity University faculty accounts are on /users/USER_NAME/Local/HTML-Documents.
My initial path is /users/thicks/Local/HTML-Documents
Notice how I have completed the new
profile below!

Profile Name: [This name
appears to the left and can be any text that helps me identify the Computer
Science Faculty web site] My profile name is Computer Science

Host Name: My host name
is sol.cs.trinity.edu

Port: My port is
21

Login Name: My login name is

is ******** [Do
not include the password on public access machines- others will be
able to access and change your accoun; they will be able to add, delete,
or alter files. When the password is left blank, the FTP Explorer application
will bring up a dialog window and prompt you for the password]

initial path is /users/thicks/Local/HTML-Documents

Attempts: [This
the number of times that you wish the application to attempt to connect.]

Download Path:
[What
is the location on your local machine from which you are most likely to
upload and download file? This is just a starting location and may be altered
later. Many people use C:\ (hard drive C) or A:\ (floppy drive A).] My
download path is C:/3220 (Folder/Directory
3220 at the root of hard drive C)

is just an optional text reminder of why you selected this ftp site.] My
optional description is 1Trinity University Computer
Science Web Site
I push the Save button to save this connection!
I then push the Connect button to
connect to this site! (below)
4] The screen below shows the FTP Explorer graphical link
when connected to thicks@sol.cs.trinity.edu/users/thicks/Local/HTML-Documents

4] The screen below shows a profile configuration for
the Trinity University Faculty Web Accounts!

FTP - Download
1] Let us assume that we are connected to host computer
www.trinityedu.
The
local computer (IBM, Mac, HP,
etc.) is the local machine on which I am running the ftp application. Downloading
is the process of transferring files from host computer to the local
computer.
