Tutorial: Windows 2000 Server Terminal Services - Install, Setup, Use

Windows 2000 Terminal Services offer convenient ways to remotely manage and access computers via the Internet and Intranet. Windows 2000 Terminal Services is only available on Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, etc. For those who have used PC Anywhere, it is a great alternative.
1] Open the control panel. Using mouse, double click on Add/Remove Programs. [See Below!]

2] Using the mouse, click on the Add/Remove Windows Component button. [See Below!]

3] Be patient for a minute or so. Using the mouse, select the Terminal Services. You may use this in an administrative mode without purchasing additional licenses. As many as two administrators may use it at one time. If you have purchased or plan to purchase the Terminal Services Licenses for each connecting computer, select the Terminal Services Licensing as well. [See Below!]

4] For purposes of this tutorial, we are going to use only the administrative Terminal Services. [See Below!] Using the mouse, select the Next Button. [See Below!]

5] Select remote administration. It appears that you may select the Application server mode if you plan to purchase licenses during the next 90 days. Using the mouse, select/push the Next button. [See Below]

6] Using the mouse, push/select the OK button. [See Below!]

7] Select the location of the I386 install directory. Students in my classes copy this to the root of their hard drive. Select the right location. Using the mouse, push/select the OK button. [See Below!]

9] Making progress! [See Below!]

10] Finished at last. Using the mouse, select the Finish Button. [See Below!]

11] You will have to restart your computer to start the service. Using the mouse, select the Yes Button. [See Below!]


5] Using the mouse, select the Services Icon From Services & Applications on the left. [See Below!] Scroll down and examine the Terminal Services Service on the right. It should be Started and Automatic. [See Below!]

1] Using the mouse, hold down the Start --> Select Programs --> Select Administrative Tools --> Select Terminal Services Client Creator. [See Below!]

2] For Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Me, select the 32-bit option. You will need two empty formatted disks. Using the mouse, select the OK Button. [See Below!]

3] Using the mouse, select the OK Button. [See Below!]

4] Files being copied to first floppy disk. [See Below!]

5] There will be a delay to provide you an opportunity to insert the second blank floppy disk. After you have done so, push the mouse, select the OK Button. [See Below!]

7] After the two disks are created, you should see the window below. Using the mouse, select the OK Button. [See Below!]

1] Using the mouse, hold down the Start --> Select Programs --> Select Administrative Tools --> Select Terminal Services Manager. [See Below!]

2] Using the mouse, push/select the Continue button. [See Below!]

3] Enter your name. Using the mouse, push/select the OK button. [See Below!]

4] Using the mouse, push/select the OK button. [See Below!]

5] Read the agreement. Using the mouse, push/select the I Agree button if you so choose. [See Below!]

6] Change the location if you like; it is my feeling that all software should be installed in the Program Files directory, if possible. Using the mouse, push/select the Square Install Button on the left side of the window. [See Below!]

7] Using the mouse, push/select the Yes button. [See Below!]

8] Using the mouse, push/select the OK button. [See Below!]

1] On The SERVER --> Using the mouse, hold down the Start --> Select Programs --> Select Administrative Tools --> Select Terminal Services Manager. [See Below!]

2] SERVER --> At the moment, the only user on computer PraiseHim is thicks. [See Below!]

3] On The CLIENT --> Using the mouse, hold down the Start --> Select Programs --> Select Terminal Services Client --> Select client Connection Manager. [See Below!]

4] CLIENT --> Insert a connection name of your choice; I have used PraiseHim 88x600 because I intend to create a 800x600 connection to PraiseHim.biz. Enter either the DNS name or the IP address of your server; the DNS name of my server in this illustration is PraiseHim.biz. Using the mouse, push/select the Next button. [See Below!]
5] CLIENT --> Using the mouse, push/select the Next button. [See Below!]
6] CLIENT --> Select the desired screen resolution; I am choosing 800 x 600. Using the mouse, push/select the Continue button. [See Below!]
7] CLIENT --> I have chosen to cache some of the bitmaps in an effort to speed up delivery. Using the mouse, push/select the Next button. [See Below!]
8] CLIENT --> Using the mouse, push/select the Next button. [See Below!]
9] CLIENT --> Using the mouse, push/select the Next button. [See Below!]
10] CLIENT --> Using the mouse, push/select the Finish button. [See Below!]
11] CLIENT --> You can now see that the Client Connection Manager has a new icon. The connection may be launched by double-clicking on that icon. [See Below!]
12] CLIENT --> Using the mouse, hold down the Start --> Select Programs --> Select Terminal Services Client --> Select PraiseHim 800x600. [See Below!]
13] CLIENT --> Enter an Administrative User and Password. Using the mouse, push/select the OK button. [See Below!]
14] CLIENT --> We have a connection. Examine the PraiseHim.biz - Terminal Services Client (PraiseHim 800x600). [See Below!]
15] SERVER --> From the Terminal Services Manager, you can see the connection to Administrator; the server can also delete the connection! [See Below!]
16] Client --> You are allowed only two Administrative Connections. You must terminate those connections properly. Should you choose to close the window with the X in the top right corner, the connection will not be freed on the server. You will have to go to the Terminal Services Manager on the Server in order to free/delete that connection. You must shut down properly! Client --> Step 1 --> Using the mouse, hold down the Start Menu and select Shut Down. [See Below!]
Client --> Step 2 --> Select Log off option in pull down control. Using the mouse, select/push the OK button. [See Below!]
